***On July 4th, Atty. Gatewood Galbraith and Dea Riley announced their intent to run for the Governorship of KENTUCKY.
Once more we have the chance to elect a educated, caring, and motivated citizen who has lived here all of his life and fought continuously for the rights of the people of Kentucky.
He said that this would be his last "run" because he will be retiring from politics after this election if he does not win the vote. He also said we need 400,000 votes to indeed win this election.
His no-nonsense approach to leading the state includes REAL reform of Education,(" Our C and D students deserve the opportunity be trained into employability also"), Health Care, Environment, ("we must insist on reclaiming the land for future use and restoring the hills and streams to their natural state"), and putting the vote to the people as far as the "Casino" issue is concerned.
This man has earned the right to run for the Governor's office. He has worked long and hard for over 20 years on all the issues which affect Kentuckians. He is a very intelligent, motivated and educated man who I believe, given the chance, can restore this state to its own natural beauty both literally and figuratively.
In my lifetime I have yet to see one politician in Kentucky that, in my opinion was not corrupted.
The Cancer rates in Kentucky can be gauged by the zip code that you live in. The corruption and mismanagement of taxes and Federal funding is outrageous. The healthcare makes you sick, literally.
We live in a state full of Coal Ash Ponds which are causing increased illnesses.
The violent crime and dangerous drugs such as Meth and Crack Cocaine are rampant. Yet we continue to keep Cannabis/Hemp illegal.
I will be voting for Gatewood in the election.

Incidentally, Gov. Brashear and Mayor Jerry Abramson of Louisville announced THEIR run for the Governor's office this week. It was all over the news yet I have yet to see a media announcement on the news (on any channel) that is reporting Galbraith and Riley’s campaign. I wonder why that is?
Wow. Do we really have a choice here? What have either one of them done for this state's middle class citizens. Not to mention the ones of us who are now unemployed, underemployed, uninsured, and unappreciated!

ScienceDaily (July 15, 2009) — Injections of THC, the active principle of cannabis, eliminate dependence on opiates (morphine, heroin) in rats deprived of their mothers at birth. The findings could lead to therapeutic alternatives to existing substitution treatments.

In order to study psychiatric disorders, neurobiologists use animal models, especially maternal deprivation models. Depriving rats of their mothers for several hours a day after their birth leads to a lack of care and to early stress. The lack of care, which takes place during a period of intense neuronal development, is liable to cause lasting brain dysfunction.
The study was carried out by Valérie Daugé and her team at the Laboratory for Physiopathology of Diseases of the Central Nervous System (UPMC / CNRS / INSERM).
Valérie Daugé's team at the Laboratory for Physiopathology of Diseases of the Central Nervous System (UPMC / CNRS / Inserm) analyzed the effects of maternal deprivation combined with injections of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the main active principle in cannabis, on behavior with regard to opiates.
Previously, Daugé and her colleagues had shown that rats deprived of their mothers at birth become hypersensitive to the rewarding effect of morphine and heroin (substances belonging to the opiate family), and rapidly become dependent. In addition, there is a correlation between such behavioral disturbances linked to dependence, and hypoactivity of the enkephalinergic system, the endogenous opioid system.
To these rats, placed under stress from birth, the researchers intermittently administered increasingly high doses of THC (5 or 10 mg/kg) during the period corresponding to their adolescence (between 35 and 48 days after birth). By measuring their consumption of morphine in adulthood, they observed that, unlike results previously obtained, the rats no longer developed typical morphine-dependent behavior. Moreover, biochemical and molecular biological data corroborate these findings. In the striatum, a region of the brain involved in drug dependence, the production of endogenous enkephalins was restored under THC, whereas it diminished in rats stressed from birth which had not received THC.
Such animal models are validated for understanding the neurobiological and behavioral effects of postnatal conditions in humans. In this context, the findings point to the development of new treatments that could relieve withdrawal effects and suppress drug dependence.
The enkephalinergic system produces endogenous enkephalins, which are neurotransmitters that bind to the same receptors as opiates and inhibit pain messages to the brain.

14 POT DISPENSARIES IN COUNTY SHUTTERED
Dozens Arrested in Probe of Suspected Illegal Storefronts
SAN DIEGO -- More than two dozen people operating marijuana
dispensaries were arrested in countywide raids that also shut down 14
storefronts, authorities said yesterday.
District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis said the search warrants served at
dispensaries and some homes Wednesday "has nothing to do with
legitimate medical marijuana patients or their caregivers."
She said the 14 storefronts targeted were "so-called medical
marijuana businesses that appear to be run by drug dealers." One of
the businesses, she said, netted $700,000 profit in six months.
According to the state's medical marijuana laws and the Attorney
General's guidelines, it is illegal to profit from the sale or
distribution of marijuana.
The user has to have a recommendation for medical marijuana by a
physician. That person, and/or his or her caregiver, have to be
verified members of a collective or cooperative in order to be
compliant with medical marijuana laws.
Officials declined to give details about the backgrounds of those
arrested, but San Diego Police Chief William Lansdowne said some of
those in custody have prior drug arrests.
Authorities said they are still tallying the amount of marijuana and
money seized in the operation. At least $70,000 in cash and six guns
were seized.
Lansdowne said Wednesday's search and seizures culminated a
five-month investigation that started with residents' complaints of
noise, vandalism and other crimes associated with the dispensaries.
"There are now 60 storefronts operating and doing this under the
guise of helping people who are sick," Dumanis said.
Some medical marijuana advocates lashed out at law enforcement's
handling of the raids.
"SWAT-style tactics are just not called for," said Margaret
Dooley-Sammuli, deputy state director for the Drug Policy Alliance,
based in Los Angeles.
Kris Hermes, spokesman for Americans for Safe Access based in
Oakland, urged for regulations to be enacted for the safe access to
medical marijuana.
Dumanis said patients or their designated caregivers who are lawfully
recommended by a physician can always cultivate plants on their
property for their use.
Deputy District Attorney Steve Walter said 23 people were arrested in
San Diego and eight people were arrested in North County. Two men
arrested face federal charges.

DON'T BOGART THAT RESEARCH
When the federal Department of Health and Human Services recently
issued a request for proposals, seeking competitive applications for
the production, analysis and distribution of "marijuana cigarettes,"
the request might have seemed a bit unusual to those unfamiliar with
Washington's dance around cannabis research. The federal government,
after all, is not widely known to support marijuana cultivation.
But those in the know just shrugged. The department has issued
similar requests every few years to select a contractor to conduct
government-approved marijuana research, and with depressing
regularity it has then awarded an exclusive contract to the
University of Mississippi. For 40 years now, Washington has sought
such "competitive applications" and Mississippi "wins" every time.
This rigged contest has successfully thwarted meaningful academic
inquiry into marijuana's medicinal value, without which the debate
over its efficacy is bound to endure. Other studies -- not conducted
by the University of Mississippi -- have suggested that marijuana has
therapeutic value. But because the United States has discouraged such
research and made it legally difficult to undertake, these studies
have been limited in scope. What's missing is the broad research
analyzing the cultivation and properties of different strains and
their effects on a variety of illnesses. For example, a strain of
cannabis that is most effective with glaucoma may not be the same
strain best suited to cancer patients.
Even if the university were running a perfect program, one
institution cannot fulfill the country's research needs. In February
2007, when Administrative Law Judge Mary Ellen Bittner recommended
that the Drug Enforcement Administration grant a license to cultivate
marijuana for research purposes to a botanist at the University of
Massachusetts, she said she had concluded that the supply of
marijuana from the University of Mississippi program was of
insufficient quality and quantity for research purposes.
The deadline for this latest round of applications is Oct. 9. The
government should take the opportunity to break the University of
Mississippi's monopoly and choose a different institution. That step
alone would be a sign that the Obama administration will prioritize
science over politics. Merely shifting the contract from one
institution to another, however, won't change the status quo. That
will only happen when the federal government changes policy and
awards multiple contracts for this important research.
